Driving in Ireland

“Distances can be misleading” Many Blue Book properties are off the major road network and some secondary roads can be poorly surfaced and tiring to drive on. Leave yourself plenty of time to enjoy the countryside and sightseeing. Road signs show distances in kilometres (Republic of Ireland) and miles (Northern Ireland).

Be sure to plan your route the previous night or before you travel to Ireland if you are on a self drive package. If you are travelling on a chauffeur drive package you will have a worry-free time as you tour director will take of the travelling you just have to sit back and relax…

Sir Walter Raleigh was Mayor of Youghal in 1588 and 1589. Youghal is on the southern coast of Ireland on the N25, 35 minutes from Cork Airport, two hours from Shannon Airport.

This area is a golfers paradise; 12 Courses within 1 hour’s drive. Picture perfect to tour the beautiful South, Waterford Crystal, Cobh, Jameson Irish Whiskey Centre, Blarney, Rock of Cashel are all within easy driving distance. Ballymaloe House is a family-run country house hotel famous for its outstanding hospitality and superb food. The 17th century house built onto a Norman keep is nestled in a 400 acre estate in rural East Cork. Ballymaloe House is only 20 miles from the historic city of Cork, and minutes from the breathtaking south coast. The bedrooms come in all shapes and sizes, from large and airy to cozy including ground floor rooms in the courtyard. Amenities include a small golf course on the premises and within easy reach of several other championship golf courses. Sea and river fishing can be arranged within 5-20 miles. Cashel House, formerly one of Connemara’s most gracious homes, set in 50 acres of grounds on the beautiful coastline of Cashel Bay with Cashel Hill rising behind. Old fashioned (in the best sense of the word), Currarevagh House is a Victorian country manor romantically situated on the shores of Lough Corrib in 150 acres of private woodland. Built by the present owner’s ancestors in 1842, it is still run more along the lines of a private country house rather then as an hotel, and the tranquil informality lends itself to those seeking a relaxing few days. Lough Corrib is famous for its wild brown trout fishing and Ghillies (guides) can be arranged at current rates.

There is an 18 hole golf course in Oughterard and five other courses within an hour’s drive. The traditional Irish Country House atmosphere that Currarevagh provides offers a uniquely wonderful experience.

Having all Connemara (including the Aran Islands and The Burren) within easy reach for touring, Currarevagh is the perfect base for exploring the magnificent West of Ireland. Our own boats with engine provide guests with the opportunity of enjoying Lough Corrib, and picnics are prepared on request. There are many walks, both on our private estate and in the local area, including the recently upgraded and spectacular Western Way.

Enniscoe House is listed as a Heritage House of Ireland and has passed to the present through twelve generations of the family to the present owner, Susan Kellett. She has now been joined by her son, DJ Kellett. The family portraits, antique furniture, open fires, good food and wine, and a warm welcome, all contribute to the pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. The house is situated on the shores of Lough Conn, with attractive views of the lake across the parkland. The old walled garden has been restored, and another garden produces organically grown vegetables. One farmyard now houses a small agricultural museum, tearoom and shop, and the genealogy centre that researches names and families of Mayo origin.

There is brown trout fishing on Lough Conn, other trout and salmon fishing nearby. The fishery manager can make all arrangements for boats, gillies, tuition, and hire of equipment. There are three golf courses within easy reach, and riding stables in the area. Enniscoe is a good centre for exploring North Mayo, Achill to the south, and Sligo to the north.

Marlfield House is a beautifully restored Regency period house set on 36 acres of fine gardens and woodland and close to miles of golden beaches. The Bowe family opened it’s doors to guests over 30 years ago and it has continued as a highly acclaimed country house and restaurant ever since. Rooms are filled with beautiful antiques, paintings and vases of flowers from the garden. All overlook the gardens and grounds, have marble bathrooms and the six grand state rooms open on to the lake and wildfowl reserve. The extensive gardens include a croquet lawn, tennis court, woodland walks, a lake and a rose, vegetable and herb garden which provides much of the produce for the kitchen.

This bright, elegant restaurant, run by Stephane Robin, serves modern classic cuisine using the best Irish produce in season. The restaurant has played host to many famous guests over the past 29 years.
Chef Guillaume Lebrun’s signature dishes include the Lobster Ravioli, Roast Challans Duck for two, Assiette Gourmande au Chocolat. Everything is made on the premises from the wonderful selection of breads to the petit fours. The wine list is very impressive in both its depth and its range – do take time to peruse it.

“Distances can be misleading” Many Blue Book properties are off the major road network and some secondary roads can be poorly surfaced and tiring to drive on. Leave yourself plenty of time to enjoy the countryside and sightseeing. Road signs show distances in kilometres (Republic of Ireland) and miles (Northern Ireland).

Be sure to plan your route the previous night or before you travel to Ireland if you are on a self drive package. If you are travelling on a chauffeur drive package you will have a worry-free time as you tour director will take of the travelling you just have to sit back and relax…

Built by the present owner’s ancestors in 1842, it is still run more along the lines of a private country house rather then as an hotel, and the tranquil informality lends itself to those seeking a relaxing few days. Lough Corrib is famous for its wild brown trout fishing and Ghillies (guides) can be arranged at current rates.

There is an 18 hole golf course in Oughterard and five other courses within an hour’s drive. The traditional Irish Country House atmosphere that Currarevagh provides offers a uniquely wonderful experience.

Having all Connemara (including the Aran Islands and The Burren) within easy reach for touring, Currarevagh is the perfect base for exploring the magnificent West of Ireland. Enniscoe House is listed as a Heritage House of Ireland and has passed to the present through twelve generations of the family to the present owner, Susan Kellett. She has now been joined by her son, DJ Kellett. The family portraits, antique furniture, open fires, good food and wine, and a warm welcome, all contribute to the pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. The house is situated on the shores of Lough Conn, with attractive views of the lake across the parkland. The old walled garden has been restored, and another garden produces organically grown vegetables. One farmyard now houses a small agricultural museum, tearoom and shop, and the genealogy centre that researches names and families of Mayo origin.

There is brown trout fishing on Lough Conn, other trout and salmon fishing nearby. The fishery manager can make all arrangements for boats, gillies, tuition, and hire of equipment. There are three golf courses within easy reach, and riding stables in the area. Enniscoe is a good centre for exploring North Mayo, Achill to the south, and Sligo to the north.

Marlfield House is a beautifully restored Regency period house set on 36 acres of fine gardens and woodland and close to miles of golden beaches. The Bowe family opened it’s doors to guests over 30 years ago and it has continued as a highly acclaimed country house and restaurant ever since. Rooms are filled with beautiful antiques, paintings and vases of flowers from the garden. All overlook the gardens and grounds, have marble bathrooms and the six grand state rooms open on to the lake and wildfowl reserve. Newforge is centrally located in Northern Ireland and well positioned as a base for touring County Armagh and County Down. Established in 1981,Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud is Ireland’s top restaurant, holder of two Michelin stars as well as virtually all the top national and international awards. This bright, elegant restaurant, run by Stephane Robin, serves modern classic cuisine using the best Irish produce in season. The restaurant has played host to many famous guests over the past 29 years.
Chef Guillaume Lebrun’s signature dishes include the Lobster Ravioli, Roast Challans Duck for two, Assiette Gourmande au Chocolat. Everything is made on the premises from the wonderful selection of breads to the petit fours. The wine list is very impressive in both its depth and its range – do take time to peruse it.
