Day To Day Itinerary

*Itinerary may be subject to change*

October 4th

Dinner and refreshments will be served. You will awaken this morning to your first glimpse of Ireland’s forty shades of green.

October 5th

Arrival Dublin. Breakfast. Travel to the Ulster border and discover where Red Hugh O’Neill defeated Lord Mountjoy at the Battle of Moyry Pass, otherwise known as “the Gap of the North”. Our local guide will relate why here became an important stronghold for the O’Neill’s during the famous Nine Year’s War. We will stay locally tonight with a welcome dinner and hear more legendary stories.

October 6th

After our breakfast, we meet our local guide who will travel with us around the South Armagh Border where we visit the remains of Glassdrummond Castle, the stronghold of the O’Neill’s of the Fews. We then travel to a hidden gem, the O Neill of the Fews family vault in Creggan churchyard which dates to the 1400s. On a stone on a vault see a hand imprint, the symbol of the O’Neill’s of Ulster. In the early evening enjoy traditional music session and local dish at a nearby restaurant and draw upon Celtic Myths and Legends associated with the local area before returning to our hotel.

October 7th

This morning after breakfast we travel to Armagh City. We visit the Cardinal O’Fiaich Library. The Cardinal recognised the importance of the O Neill’s and the Gaelic traditions and wrote many pieces on their dynasty which can be viewed at the library. After lunch (at your own cost) we visit Benburb Castle and Benburb Priory. This was the chief house of Shane (The Proud) in the mid-16th century as he battled against the English aggressor and it was also the site of a very important battle, the Battle of Benburb in 1646 when Owen Roe O’Neill won a huge Victory over a combined Scots/ English army. Also, discover the O Neill’s collection and archives in the wonderful new library and museum. Then travel onto Cookstown for dinner and overnight.

October 8th

Today we spend a day locally in the Heartland of the O’Neill’s in County Tyrone. We walk in the footsteps of the O’Neill’s, visiting their inauguration site at Tullaghoge Fort. After travelling some of the Tyrone countryside we visit the Clans former place of residence known today as the Hill of the O’Neill’s. We also have time to visit Ranfurly Arts and Visitor centre and learn a little more about the O’Neill history.

October 9th

This morning we take a little trip along the poet’s trail and visit the Heaney Homeplace, celebrating the life and literature of the poet and Nobel Laureate who was one of Ireland’s greatest writers. Following that we take the short trip to one of Ireland’s oldest thatched pub for lunch and a song or two at the Crosskeys Inn. Later we travel to Shane’s Castle on the shore of Lough Neagh, ancestral home of the Clanaboy O’Neill’s and more recently, one of the locations for Game of Thrones filming. We continue or journey Northwards to the Antrim coast and our overnight hotel.

October 10th

We take a morning trip to the world renown Giants Causeway. Marvel at its majestic sight before we visit Dunluce Castle, a stronghold of the McQuillan’s and later the McDonnell clans who both in their time helped the O Neill’s in battles against the English. We then take a short trip along the Antrim coast to Cushendun and the burial place of Shane O Neill.

October 11th

Today we travel towards the City of Derry and into County Donegal, once a stronghold of the O Neill’s. We visit Rathmullan Heritage Centre and hear how in 1607 the O Neill’s and the O’Donnell’s and families fled Ireland (the Flight of the Earls). This afternoon we take a coastal drive with lunch at a traditional Irish bar before we head back to Letterkenny and our hotel.

October 12th

After breakfast, we take the short journey to An Grianán of Aileach, the royal palace of the northern O’Neill’s from the 5th to 12th century. A magnificent stone Ring fort with a history that goes back as far as early Christian times, but the mound on which it is built goes back even further. In the afternoon we take a short journey to the City of Derry. We walk its famous City walls and spend some time exploring the city.

October 13th

Today we head southwards towards Dublin. We stop off in Enniskillen and visit Enniskillen castle, a stronghold of the Maguire Clan who stood with the O’Neill’s during the Nine years war. Time is allowed for lunch before we head onwards to our Dublin based Hotel where we have a farewell dinner and Irish entertainment.
